FAA Recently Cleared Rocket for Launches
In a tense development for space launch enthusiasts, Firefly Aerospace confirmed that its Alpha Flight 7 rocket’s first stage was lost during ground testing at the Briggs facility near Austin. Company officials stated, “All safety measures were followed, and no personnel were harmed during the incident.” The rocket was being prepped for a commercial Lockheed Martin payload launch targeted for late 2025.
Videos recorded by witnesses show two large explosions and plumes of smoke billowing from the site, known as Rocket Ranch. Despite repeated setbacks, Firefly had just received FAA clearance in late August to resume Alpha launches, following a previous anomaly in April that led to an investigation and grounding order.
The incident has rattled investors, with Firefly’s stock falling nearly 3% on Monday and a further 5.6% in after-hours trading—now down 18% from its IPO price and nearly 39% from its first-day closing value.
Crews are assessing damage to the test stand, but other operations remain unaffected. As the investigation continues, Firefly is committed to transparency and will release further updates regarding launch impacts and remediation steps.
